The duty exemption, which was initially given for three months, was later extended on June 28 for another three months till September 30.

In this regard, a first secretary of NBR said, “Since NBR has not issued a new notification, the previous VAT rate has come into effect again.

“Until the end of last week, there was no instruction regarding the extension of the duty exemption period. That means import-level VAT on edible oil will be levied as before on expiry of the period.”

In this regard, Consumer Association Bangladesh (CAB) spokesperson Bhoktakantha editor Abdul Hannan told bdnews24.com, “There has been no change in the situation that the government can stop the discount and take it to the previous level.”

At the time, he still mentioned that the price of soybean oil is close to Tk 200 per liter and said that this price of edible oil is more than the purchasing power of the common people of the country.
