A Rohingya youth living on the Zero Line at Tumbru border in Bandarban was reportedly killed in a mine explosion inside Myanmar.

On Sunday morning, the young man was killed and another person was injured inside Myanmar opposite the Tumbru border, said Dil Mohammad, a community leader of the Tambru zero-line Rohingya camp.

The deceased Omar Farooq (18) is a resident of block number 3 of Rohingya camp on the zero line border of Ghumdhum union of Naikxyongchari upazila. Son of Ayub. Injured Md. Sahabullah alias Abuya is the son of Abul Hossain, a resident of block number 10 of the same camp.

Regarding the relatives of the deceased, Dil Mohammad told reporters, “In the morning, Omar Farooq and Sahabullah crossed the border and went to fish. About one and a half kilometers away from the Rohingya camp, a mine suddenly exploded when they reached a hilly area called Medha Pahar.

“Umar Farooq’s two legs were blown off below the knee by the mine explosion and he died on the spot, while Sahabullah was slightly injured. The incident came to light after Sahabullah reached the Rohingya camp with the body of Omar Farooq at 4 pm.”

The Myanmar military’s use of banned landmines came to light in a report by the Red Cross last March.

It is said that hundreds of people are killed every year in Myanmar due to the explosion of various explosives including land mines. Last year too, Red Cross helped 160 people injured in such an explosion.

The report notes that the risk of these explosions is increasing in conflict-prone areas such as Rakhine state.
