4 hands go around the business of eggs

Eggs, which are readily available sources of animal meat in the country, are again under discussion due to price volatility. And that’s why all classes of people are worried about this price manipulation.

According to a report of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the production of eggs in the country in the financial year 2020-21 was a total of 2 thousand 57 crores.

And in that, the availability of eggs per citizen stands at 121 per year. Whereas the previous year it was 104.

Last August, the price of eggs went up to 160 taka, then the price came down to 120 taka due to various initiatives. Now it has increased to 150.

Selina Begum, a person who eats day by day, came to market number two of Mirpur in Dhaka last Sunday to buy chicken eggs. He was shocked when he heard that 48 taka and 140 taka a dozen. At the end, he bought broken eggs for 30 taka and left for home.

On the same day, a dozen eggs were at least Tk 150 in Mohakhali raw market. The same price was in Mirpur’s Shah Smriti Market. Each chicken egg cost about 12 taka and duck egg 17 taka.

Outside the market, packaged eggs of various companies are being sold in various supershops and online at Tk 175 to Tk 220 per dozen.

How is the price increasing?

Looking for the reason behind the new increase in the price of eggs, it can be seen that this product is coming to the consumer through four different hands.

A class of suppliers or agents buys eggs from farmers, from them the wholesalers buy eggs, from them the eggs go to wholesalers, from there to retailers.

Eggs from chicken farmers change hands and the price of each one goes up by two rupees.

However, the farmers are claiming that they get little profit. Scammers say it is the middlemen suppliers who are reaping the profits. Suppliers are again blaming the big companies. Big companies are again denying the allegations.
